Durability is where this comparison starts and, for most owners, where it effectively ends. Carnauba wax lasts 4 to 8 weeks under normal conditions. In Florida heat and UV, that number skews hard to the low end — a protection window that closes before most people think to book their next wash.
Polymer sealants extend that window to 3 to 6 months and bond more consistently than natural waxes, but they still degrade and require scheduled reapplication. For a vehicle driven daily in a coastal climate, baseline coverage with wax alone means 6 to 8 applications per year. Polymer sealants require 2 to 4 cycles — neither matches what a ceramic system delivers.
A different category. A professionally applied nano ceramic coating bonds chemically to the clear coat and lasts 2 to 5 years at minimum. Multi-layer systems push well past 10 years with proper maintenance. Entry-level DIY ceramic kits sit in the 1 to 2 year range — still well past wax, but well short of a certified professional installation. The difference is not incremental. It is the difference between protecting paint six times a year and protecting it once for several years running.
Lifespan tells you how long each product stays on the car. Protection depth tells you what it actually does while it is there. Both matter.
