Ceramic coating is the most over-marketed product in detailing. Five-year warranties printed on the bottle. Showroom-floor demonstrations with water beading off a fender that was wiped down ten minutes earlier. None of it tells a collector what the coating will look like on their car in year two.

Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer — typically silicon dioxide based — that chemically bonds to the clear coat and cures into a hard, hydrophobic layer. It is not a wax sitting on top of the paint. It is not a sealant that washes off in six months. Once cured, it is part of the surface.
What that surface does: repels water, road film, bug residue, and the UV that fades unprotected paint. What it does not do: stop a rock chip. A coating is a chemical shield, not an impact shield. That distinction decides everything else in this guide.
It preserves what is already there. The gloss and depth of the paint hold between drives. Maintenance washes are meaningfully safer because contamination releases instead of grinding in. UV fade slows. Water spots release with a rinse instead of etching. Bird droppings and bug residue stop bonding to the clear coat the way they bond to bare paint.
It does not fix what is already wrong. A coating over swirl marks freezes those swirls in place for the life of the coating. A coating over water spots seals the etching. A coating over a panel with light clear-coat failure does not save the panel — it puts a glossy lid on the failure. The product cannot improve what is under it. Prep does that.
